Question:
Recently for the past 3 to 4 weeks I’ve been experiencing a unusual flutter in my heart. it feels like it would skip a beat. Now recently i seen a cardiologist for that i had a EKG,Chest X Ray,echocardiogram full blood work. the cardiologist said everything is normal. then a weeks later they still continued. the heart palpitations would happen now mostly before i go to bed. Its weird because it mostly happens when i sleep on my left side like last night i was laying on my left side watching TV then all. Of a sudden i felt a flutter in my chest. i put my hand on my heart and every time i breath in it would speed up really fast and beat irregular. this is extremely scary because i don’t know if its dangerous are not. And sometimes when I am not sleeping i would just be relaxing And it would feel it would beat forcefully for 2 seconds.  Can u please answer the question and. Try to make a diagnosis.i am healthy and. Fit and exercise and. Lift weights. thank u

Palpitations are feelings that your heart is skipping a beat, fluttering, or beating too hard or too fast. You may have these feelings in your chest, throat, or neck. They can occur during activity or even when you’re sitting still or lying down.

Causes (ranging from benign to potentially dangerous) include :
1. A variety of underlying cardiac conditions, including coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, mitral valve prolapse, etc.
2. Abnormal levels of “electrolytes” (minerals) in the blood. Decreased potassium and/or magnesium are the most common associated abnormalities of electrolytes. Both may be caused by the use of diuretics (water pills), among other reasons.
3. There are unusual congenital (familial) causes of ventricular arrhythmias.
4. Abnormal conditions such as increased thyroid hormones, and others.
5. Toxins, including alcohol.
6. Stimulants such as

  • Caffeine Nicotine and/or Cocaine can cause serious ventricular arrhythmias.
  • Some over-the-counter medications and herbal/natural formulations contain important stimulants

7. Infection, inflammation or degeneration of the heart muscle.
8. Infections at other sites in the body.
9. They are often worse with lack of sleep, or stress.

Hope this helps,
Dr T
