Question:
Hi Dr T,
What exactly is this and what problem does this cause?

It is a birth defect. If severe, it may compress and displace your heart and lungs and may need to be fixed.

It is called pectus excavatum, and associated anomalies such as scoliosis should also be considered. Occasionally Marfan syndrome and Mitral Valve prolapse occur in this type of patient.

Pectus excavatum or funnel chest

Hope this helps,
Dr T
