Question:
Hello , I am a 24 yr old male with moderate pectus excavatum along with Mitral Valve Prolapse. I was doing some research on the new minimal invasive robotic surgery for Mitral Valve Prolapse. I was wondering if having surgery to repair my mitral valve prolapse would interfere with me also wanting to have the Nuss procedure done for my pectus excavatum? I will be seeing a cardiologist to discuss this more in depth when my health insurance returns in January. However, in the mean time I would appreciate your opinion on this matter.
Your cardiologist will be the person to advice whether a mitral valve operation is needed. Your cardiac surgeon will be the one to advice you about repair vs. replacement and management of your Pectus. While repair is the optimal choice, how it should be performed (“open” vs. “robotic”) depends on factors I cannot judge from here. The robotic procedure is performed in only a few major centers, is very new and you need to make sure about the success rate of your surgeon (don’t just use his word, check him out)!
